Summer Assignment:          Due First Day of Class,  Monday August 11th 2008

1.  Read: Chapters 1-6  before the first day of class.

2.  Write:  3-5 page Essay (typed, double space) on the following topic:

In your opnion, which three of the original thirteen colonies made the most significant contributions to the American values of democratic self-government, educational opportunity, religious toleration, social plurality, and economic materialism?  Explain your choice.

**If you do not have access to a computer -- then print neatly - I'll accept that too**

3.  Watch the DOI Video Clip in the "video" folder

Democratic Self-government:  a government put together and run by the people of a society

Educational Opportunity:  the availability or unavaility of formal schooling to the people in a society

Religious Toleration:  how well a society allows and/or accepts more than one religion within a society

Social Plurality:  the diversity and/or differences amongst people within a society

Economic Materialism:  the value placed on, and availability of, luxuries and wants in a society (as opposed to needs)
